Ivan Ohienko (Metropolitan Ilarion) – Teacher and Educator of the Ukrainian Language at the University of Manitoba

The personality of Ivan Ivanovych Ohienko, famous Ukrainian church and public figure, historian, educator, linguist, member of the Academic Association of Taras Shevchenko (1922), philosopher, poet, editor and the author of the first full canonical translation of the Bible to Ukrainian represents significant interest to Ukrainians all over the world. His publications only in the linguistic area are vast, as for example: “Review of the Ukrainian Linguistics” (1907), “Ukrainian Stylistic Dictionary” (1924), “Purity and Proper Usage of the Ukrainian Language”(1925), “Modern Literary Ukrainian” (1935), “History of the Literary Ukrainian” (1950), etc.

Ivan Ivanovych Ohienko in his writings points out the hardships overcome by the Ukrainian language during centuries of oppression, discrimination, restrictions and targeted language elimination. I. Ohienko researched the phenomenon of “the unbeaten spirit” of the language as the “soul of the nation”, the most “precious treasure” of its people. At the same time, he strongly rejected the unsupported theories of “traditional unity of the Russian dialects” and common language – “the cradle of the Ukrainian, Belarus and Russian languages”. All his life he actively and continuously served the cause of the Ukrainian nation, promoting its rebirth and revival. By his activities in Winnipeg, just in the linguistic area and education, Ivan Ivanovych Ohienko left a significant heritage for the future generations. His efforts were focused not just on de-russification and enrichment of the language heritage but on activities targeted at the preservation of the national identity of Ukrainians and consolidation of the Ukrainian community outside Ukraine.

In 1949 due to the efforts of Jaroslav Rudnycky and active involvement of Ivan Ohienko, the Department of Slavic Studies at the University of Manitoba was established, which became the educational and consolidating center for Ukrainian and non-Ukrainian youth. For years the Department facilitated the enrichment of the language and cultural heritage of Canadian Ukrainians, dissemination of the academic ideas and accumulation of knowledge in different areas of the Ukrainian studies. It is understandable why scholars and students in general appeal more and more to the heritage of Ivan Ohienko. Learning Ukrainian as a foreign/second language, particularly at the advanced level, students of Ukrainian at the University of Manitoba have the opportunity to research and analyze Ohienko’s publications devoted to various aspects of Ukrainian studies, including linguistic issues and the role Ivan Ohienko played in the revival of the spirit of Ukrainians, sustaining civil peace and accord and the preservation of the national identity of Ukrainians.

Особистість Метрополита Іларіона (Івана Івановича Огієнка), відомого українського церковного і громадського діяча, історика церкви, педагога, мовознавця, літературознавця, дійсного члена Наукового Товариства ім. Т. Шевченка (від 1922 року), філософа, поета, редактора, видавця, автора першого повного канонічного перекладу українською мовою Біблії представляє неябиякий інтерес для україністів всього світу. Своїми працями в царині мовознавства І.І.. Огієнко показав воістину тернистий шлях, яким пройшла українська мова в умовах століть заборон, утисків і обмежень, дослідив феномен незнищенності її, як «душі нації», «найціннішого скарбу» народу. Водночас він переконливо спростовував необґрунтовані теорії щодо «ісконного єдінства русскіх наречій» і спільної мовної колиски для української, білоруської та російської мов. Він чесно і сповна служив українській справі, до останніх днів свого довгого й важкого життя не полишав подвижницької діяльності на ниві відродження нації. Своєю діяльністю у Вінніпезі тільки в галузі мовознавства і педагогіки, І.І. Огієнко лишив неабиякий слід для майбутніх поколінь. Мова йде не тільки про неухильну працю по дерусифікації і збагаченню мовної спадщини, а перш за все про діяльність, направлену на збереження національної свідомості і згуртуванню української громади за межами України. Так у 1949 році за безпосередньою участю І.І. Огієнка та завдяки зусиллям Ярослава Б. Рудницького було створено Департамент Славістичних Студій в Манiтобському Унiверситетi, який став осередком згуртування і навчання молоді як українського, так і неукраїнського походження. Протягом десятиріч Департамент сприяв збагаченню мовної і культурної спадщини українців, розповсюдженню наукової думки та накопиченню знань в різних ділянках українських студій. Зрозуміло, чому науковці і загалом студенти все частіше звертаються до особистості І.І. Огієнка. Вивчаючи українську мову як іноземну/другу, особливо на поглибленому етапі оволодіння мовою, студенти мають можливість аналізувати праці І.І. Огієнка присвячені як проблемам мовознавства, так і його ролі у відродженні духовності в Україні, підтримання громадянського миру і злагоди та збереженню національної ідентичності українців.
