“Я ХОТІВ І СВОЄ ДОДАТИ”

Сербський Єпископ Миколай (Велімірович) пише про те, як добрі діла спонукують і других до добрих діл. Він каже про те, як один багач замовив у молодого, на разі ще недосвідченого, ювеліра, щоб той з певної кількости золота, яку він йому доручив, зробив гарного Хреста для Церкви.

А той застановляючись над такою гарною жертвою подумав і сам долучитися до неї. В нього мало було золота. Та те що мав доложив до золота багача й таки зробив прекрасний Хрест. Приходить багач провіряти, як удалася праця. Бере Хреста на вагу, бо вже мабуть мав досвід, як часами ювеліри можуть злакомитися на золото й замінити частину його меншевартісним металом.

Зважив і начебто сповнилися його підозріння: Хрест важив більше чим мав важити. Тоді багач став обвинувачувати молодого ювеліра в тому, що той підмінив його золота на дешевший метал, що важив більш чим золото. А той відповів: “Ні, але я хотів і свого золота додати, як та вдова, що дала дві лепти, щоб і мені мати нагороду від Христа Господа.”

Серце багача розтаялось! Він обняв молодого ювеліра й прийняв його, як рідного сина й спадкоємця. Ось так, брати й сестри, добре діло може зворушити інших людей до добрих діл. Скільки ж людей, буває, наслідують злі діла оправдуючись так: “Коли іншим можна, то чому мені ні?” Наскільки краще чинити добрі діла, щоб люди їх наслідували. Прагнімо саме так чинити й буде добре і нам і світові через нас.

Тут – особливе значіння Хреста Господнього, якого ми сьогодні святкуємо. Христос доказав Свою любов до нас і виявив природу справжньої любові Своїм стражданням на Хресті. Він же сказав: “Ніхто більшої любови не має над ту, як хто душу свою поклав би за друзів своїх” (Івана 15:13). І це не були тільки голі слова – Господь ділом виконав те, про що говорив.

Його чин зворушив безліч людей всіх віків і всіх сторін віддатися Богу й ближньому. В цьому ж суть монашого покликання, та не тільки монашого. Мужі й дружини за прикладом цієї самовідданої любові вірно змагаються зростати в самовідданій любові одне до одного та до своїх дітей. Це також високе й важке покликання, на яке вказують корони, які на Шлюбі пригадують корони мученики, що “славно страждали й вінчалися”. І кожне покликання могло б черпати сили від цієї золотої дії Господа на Хресті! Додаймо й свого золота, щоб і нам здобути нагороду від Нього!

ONE CANDLE LIGHTS ANOTHER

16th Sunday after Pentecost. Exaltation of the Life-giving Cross

It is not unusual to hear people complain about how bad things are in the world. There are exceptions. There are some people who are always looking for something good to say, something to be thankful for, something to celebrate about. Sometimes such people are called naive. There used to be a term for them: Polly annas. That sounds like a parrot. Maybe the words of such perennial optimists sound to some like the mindless repetitions of this amazing bird who sounds so human but is not.

Jesus was not naive. He spoke of the world in harsh-sounding terms. He said the people of His day (and this applies to our day as well) were “an evil and adulterous generation”. He spoke of judgement and punishment. Yet He did not give up us. On the contrary. He is our true friend. He tells it like it is and His love is not pretense. We know this because He died for us.

We are venerating the Cross today in honour of its finding in Jerusalem in the fourth century by Helena, the mother of the Roman Emperor, Constantine. We see Jesus dead upon it. We are reminded that it was not tragic destiny that overtook Him. He willingly accepted this painful and humiliating transition from the visible world to the invisible because of His love for us. He could have used the considerable talent and force He possessed to overpower those who opposed Him. He could have roused thousands to fight for Him. He said He could command a huge multitude of angels as well. But He did not.

His argument was: “Do your worst. I love you.” And it worked! At the very moment of His death, the centurion, Longinus, who was in charge of His crucifixion was won to be His follower. To this day one of the most powerful motivations for people to serve others, to forgive and to sacrifice their lives is the love that they have caught – reflected from the Cross.

One candle lights another. The love of Christ blazing with world-consuming brilliance from the Cross lights millions of other souls. Does it light your soul, sweet brother, sweet sister? Have you considered that suffering, victorious Love that raised Adam and Eve from the grave? Have you noted that soul-inflaming conflagration that transformed bigots into lovers, prostitutes and thieves into wholesome beings? Look to the Cross. Open your eyes. Let it light your life and make it another candle to illuminate the darkness in the world.

LA CROIX – LES FIANÇAILLES DE JÉSUS

Aujourd’hui nous fêtons la Croix sur laquelle notre Sauveur a rendu son sacrifice pour le monde entier. C’est la Fête de l’Exaltation universelle de la Croix.

Pourquoi la Croix est-elle tellement importante pour les chrétiens? Est-ce que c’est parce que nous voulons nier ce monde et ne tourner nos yeux que vers “le monde d’avenir”, celui qui ne viendra qu’après notre mort? Voulons nous échapper ce monde avec ses problèmes et sa tristesse et trouver la consolation dans nos fantaisies d’un monde parfait que nous appelons le Royaume du ciel?

Si quelqu’un pense comme cela, il n’est pas en accord avec les Écritures ou avec l’Esprit de Jésus. L’Évangile selon saint Jean dit que “Dieu a tellement aimé le monde qu’Il a donné Son Fils unique, afin que tout homme qui croit en Lui ne périsse pas, mais qu’il ait la vie éternelle” (3:16). On souligne que Dieu aime le monde parce que c’est Lui Qui l’a créé!

Et voilà la raison pour laquelle nous fêtons la Croix de Jésus. La Croix est le symbole par excellence de Son Amour pour nous. Quand nous voyons la Croix, nous nous souvenons comment Il aime le monde et, surtout, comment Il nous aime! La Croix est comme une bague qu’échangent ceux qui se fiancent. Nous portons ce symbole avec joie parce qu’il montre que Jésus nous aime, et que nous sommes choisis par Lui pour vivre avec Lui toujours. Il dit: “Je reviendrai et je vous prendrai avec Moi, si bien que là où Je suis, vous serez vous aussi” (Jean 14:3).

Cet amour, jumelé à l’amour de nos proches, transforme notre monde où règne la mort et la haine en un monde où règne la vie et l’espérance. Gloire à la Croix! Gloire à l’amour divin infini!

Recevons la Croix de Jésus dans notre coeur. Partageons Son amour avec tout le monde! Alléluia!
